Historical photographs and books preserved at Murchison
Murchison Heritage Centre now has a searchable database to help members, researchers and visitors more easily locate photos and reference works on local history thanks to a generous work volunteer effort.
Over the last six months Joan Curcio of Whroo and Jo Ewart and Peter Morse of Murchison have worked with Murchison and District Historical Society members to catalogue over 1,100 photographs and 460 books held at the Centre.
Original photographs and books have also been correctly labelled, stored and displayed so that they are conserved for current and future generations to enjoy.
The work of Joan, Jo and Peter has added to their own understanding of Murchison and district's rich local history, and in particular the history of Camp 13, a prisoner of war camp. They discovered that there were 2,000 World War II prisoners held at Camp 13 and the railway bridge at Murchison had to be renewed to accommodate the movement of large volumes of supplies to the rail siding near the camp.
The Heritagecare program is a partnership between the State Government agency Heritage Victoria and Conservation Volunteers Australia (CVA), which recruits volunteers and manages projects on behalf of Heritage Victoria.
The Brumby Government is providing more than $1.7 million over four years (2006-2010) for Heritagecare, as part of its strategy Victoria's Heritage: Strengthening our communities.
CVA Heritagecare Project Officer Heather McNaught thanked the volunteers for their contribution and presented them with Certificates of Appreciation.
“The volunteers Joan, Jo and Peter can now say they have been a part of preserving Victoria's valuable cultural heritage,†Heather said.
Planning Minister Justin Madden said the Heritagecare program empowered local communities to care for their treasured heritage assets.
“The Brumby Government is proud to support the community groups and volunteers who do such an important job caring for local heritage places and objects,'' he said.
